John Odell Planckaert, age 83 of Chesterfield, passed away Wednesday afternoon at his residence in StoryPoint, Chesterfield.

He was born October 3, 1942 to Rene and Alice (DeVolder) Planckaert in Detroit, Michigan. On May 23, 1970 John was united in marriage with Joan Thomsen at Selfridge Air Base.

John served in the United States Marine Corps, and was employed for over thirty years as a butcher at Selfridge Air Base. He enjoyed going to happy hour at Storypoint, and telling jokes.

Surviving is his son, John R. Planckaert; step son, Mark Thomsen; grandchildren, Addison, Jeremy, Catherine, Jeff and Leon’na, and great grandchildren, Ashlynn, Collin, Ethan, and Auston; honorary daughter, Kelly; son in law, Leon (Duke), and will be greatly missed by his best friend, Jim. John was predeceased by his wife, Joan on April 11, 2003; step daughter, Charmaine Johnstone and step son, Andy Thomsen.

Visiting hours are 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at Will and Schwarzkoff Funeral Home, 233 Northbound Gratiot, Mount Clemens.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.
